چکیده

A review of the literature on the management of corrosive oesophagitis with subsequent stricture formation reveals a wide variation of opinion as to suitable treatment. European methods were at variance with those of North America. General practitioners, paediatricians, and internists tackled the problem from different points of view, and even among otolaryngologists there was considerable divergence of opinion. In the past, much of the treatment began after the formation of strictures, which inevitably involved prolonged bouginage with lengthy hospitalization on both an inpatient and out-patient basis. In recent years there have been radical changes in therapy, based on the concept of prevention of stricture formation. Over a period of 10 years the authors have devised a plan of treatment based on the pathology of this condition and reported experimental investigations. About 75% of cases of acute corrosive oesophagitis are caused by the ingestion of strong caustic solutions. Acids cause more superficial injuries in the oesophagus, while in the stomach they produce more serious damage, partly because they are not neutralized by gastric juice as alkalis tend to be. Many of our common lye preparations have the consistency and appearance of milk and thus are 'fair game for little hands'. Lye in the form of crystals is the most dangerous medium, producing, even in small amounts, intense, deep burns with all their sequelae.

Corrosive oesophagitis in Nigeria: clinical spectrums and implications.

Ingested corrosive agents produce oropharyngeal and gastro-oesophageal injuries ranging from minor burns to severe necrosis, depending on the agent, amount, concentration and duration of exposure. A 10-year (1990-1999) study of 23 corrosive oesophagitis patients depicting the clinical spectrums and implications was done. There were 17 (74%) males and 6 (26%) females, with an average age of 16 y...

Effectiveness of thymoquinone, zeolite, and platelet-rich plasma in model of corrosive oesophagitis induced in rats

PURPOSE The effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), thymoquinone, and zeolite in corrosive esophageal burns was investigated in a rat model. METHODS Four groups were comprised as containing 10 rats in each group. For group I, oesophagitis was induced and no other procedure was performed (control group). For group II, oesophagitis was induced and thymoquinone was administered for 1 week v...

Acute esophageal necrosis: a case report and review

Acute esophageal necrosis, commonly referred to as "black esophagus" or "acute necrotizing esophagitis", is a rare clinical disorder with an unclear etiology. The definition excludes patients with a history of recent caustic ingestion. Oesophageal necrosis can be diagnosed at endoscopy by the presence of black necroting appearing oesophagus. Contrary to the caustic oesophagitis whose treatment ...

Acute gastroduodenal injury after ingestion of diluted herbicide pendimethalin.

The herbicide, pendimethalin, is used worldwide, but its acute toxicity is not yet widely known. There have been some reported acute pendimethalin poisoning cases in humans and most of them intentionally ingested the concentrated formulation. We describe a 73-year-old man who developed corrosive gastroduodenal injury after accidental ingestion of the diluted (300 times with water) pendimethalin...
